Virtual Convocation

In March 2020, the COVID 19 pandemic shut down most of the world,
including universities. To help keep everyone safe, students could not be
on campus or attend in-person classes. University faculty, staff and
students pivoted to online learning and began to move forward. So many
aspects of the university experience suddenly became virtual, including
convocation, a time to recognize the hard work and achievements
of students.

A virtual event was carefully designed to ensure this occasion wasn’t missed
and students and their families could celebrate this special moment. Part of
this virtual event were videos that were created to help emotionally reunite
students who had spent several months apart and were not able to come
together to attend what normally would have been an in-person ceremony.

We created a feeling of joy and celebration in a time of uncertainty and
fear. We used celebratory images, language and sounds to help the audience
take a break from the stress and heaviness of the pandemic.

Convocation is an end point for a student and marks the beginning of a
new type of relationship with the university - alumni. The care, attention and
celebratory tone were all meant to help build these important alumni
relationships with the class of 2020.
